How It All Started

Genesis Fermin and Willa Mamet, both singers and songwriters, make music together as Power Snatch. On the day of their last in-person rehearsal, Genesis walked through Willa’s door and said, “Shelter-in-place starts tomorrow; We should make an online music festival.” And Willa, having at least the good sense to listen to Genesis, said, “Let’s do it.”

Six days later, that became I Need Space: Chapter 1. Twelve artists made twelve hours of music and, as of this writing, nearly 40,000 of you have watched and loved it.

Briget Boyle, another of the performers in Chapter 1, has since joined the team to magic the technology and to house us under her record label, Waxsimile Productions. Makenzie Burt (who among other things plays in the Hubbub Club marching band and also manages Willa’s sola music) has come on, too, bringing organizational wizardry and business skills.

The theme of these times seems to be “I guess THIS is just what’s happening.”

So: now we bring you a new chapter of I Need Space every third Saturday, with six new queer musicians from all over.

Because music will always be what’s happening. Especially when we need it most.
